Getting Started as a CCTV Installer

Many times over my career I’ve had people looking for advice on the tools and training they need to get into the video surveillance industry.

The very first thing you need to look into is the licensing requirements in your state. In Australia you are required to have a security agents license to give advice or work on a CCTV system. One really stupid exception to this is if you are employed as a shop assistant who provides advice on security alarm or surveillance systems only as an incidental part of their duties. So a totally unqualified person or worse, a convicted criminal can advise you on the cameras you need and sell the equipment. It’s no wonder there are so many really bad quality installations out there.

To obtain a license you will need to have completed at least one of the courses detailed in this document. Certificate III in Technical Security can be done as a night course in TAFE. There are a large number of places that offer this course and the price varies from $750-1000 so shop around.

Now that you have the legal requirements out of the way, you will need to get the tools of the trade.
As IP CCTV and analogue CCTV require different tools, I have broken the list below up into sections.
