So you want fake security cameras

You know what really irks me?

Fake Security Cameras that don’t look like the real thing. Don’t think I’m referring to the actual cameras resemblance to a real camera. Most of them have that covered pretty well (other than the crappy plastic lens and flashing LED, which real cameras don’t have). What I’m talking about is how you install them. I have seen people using real cameras that have become faulty as dummy’s and made it obvious they don’t work by mounting them sideways.

If you are going to install dummy cameras, at least make them look like they are actually working!

Some examples of what to pay attention to.

  • Get a dummy camera that looks real with no flashing LED
  • Point the camera correctly – not at the roof or ground.
Make it point to what you are protecting. Imagine the lens has a 60 degree coverage and your target is near the centre
  • Connect the correct cables.
A camera with a power and coax cable looks better than just a single cable unless it is an IP camera with a network cable
  • Don’t have a flashing LED as real cameras don’t
  • For those large tinted domes, they need a camera inside to make them not look like a empty piece of plastic.
Don’t paint the entire dome black. Again it is obvious that a camera can’t see out. Instead have a strip left clear where the lens should look out. Also put something inside that resembles the camera lens.

4 realistic dummy camera's with warning stickersOh and an amazingly obvious one that I can’t believe people do. Don’t mount the camera so the writing is upside down or sideways.

Ok now forget all of that and just put a real camera in. Even a cheap one if put in the right location (more on cheap camera’s in another post) will give reasonable results.
