There are hundreds of different law on surveillance and where it can be used but finding them can be a challenge. Even if you do the relevant surveillance law, depending on where you live, there may be other bi-laws that apply. Additional to the surveillance laws, you should also investigate the CCTV standards and how to apply them to ensure you are getting the pixel density and image quality you require. There is no point installing a surveillance system if it can’t give you a suitable image.

There are Commonwealth, State and Territory laws that relate to taking and using images of a person without their permission, or recording their conversations or movements. Which law applies will depend on the circumstances, in particular:
- where the surveillance occurred or the photos were taken
- what was being monitored or photographed
- who was responsible for the surveillance or images.
